Carbohydrates

Most people would associate carbohydrates as something negative. They would choose to skip it altogether or eat very little amounts of it on a daily basis. BUT WHY?

Glucose which primarily comes from carbohydrates is our body’s main source of energy. Glycolysis which is the process of breaking down glucose would release pyruvic acid which is an important component in the Krebs Cycle(A very important process for our body’s energy systems). Bear with me as I am trying to simplify everything in layman’s terms and only sharing on a “need to know” basis.

Bottomline is, carbohydrates are important and fad diets/movements calling to minimize or completely remove carbs from your diet is not only baseless but also dangerous.

Glycaemic Index

There is a way to properly utilize carbohydrates depending on their Glycaemic Index(How fast that specific carb source can raise our blood sugar levels), High GI would usually mean fast digesting/instant supply of energy while Low GI would mean slow digesting/a more sustained release of energy.

Rule of thumb?

For the more active individuals, utilize the fast digesting carb sources such as : Rice, pasta, bread, oatmeal and potatoes

For the more sedentary individuals, utilize the slow digesting ones such as : Sweet potatoes, corn, quinoa, veggies or black rice.

Conclusion

Carbohydrate is not the enemy, and avoiding/minimizing carbohydrate intake isn’t just dangerous but it will hurt your fitness progress in the long run. Learn to utilize it correctly and it will propel you forward to your fitness goals.
